Costa Rica is the safest and most unique country in Central America. It is the first nation in the world in terms of enviromental protection, with more than  one third of its territory dedicated  to national parks and protected areas. It is easily reached from Europe and USA. In Costa Rica nature reigns supreme and man lives inharmony wirth the environment. The Guanacaste region is in the northwest part of the country and is one of the most beautiful areas of the country. With its twenty-six national parks (about one of the national territory), Costa Rica is the home of sustainable tourism.

Position.

Costa Rica is located in Central America, it borders on Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south. Its eastern coast is on the Caribbean sea and its western coast is on the Pacific Ocean.

51.100 Km2, dry land 50.660 Km2, water 440 Km2.

Capital

The modern city of S. Jose is the capital of Costa Rica. It is a metropolitan city where nature coexist with the historical centre, with new and modern residential buildings, shopping centres and many tourist infrastructures.

The Socio-political situation

Costa Rica is a small tropical country with a population of 3.5 million. It has benn called the Switzerland of Central America. As oasis of peace and tranquillity. It is the only state in the world with no army, wich was contitutionally abolished in 1948. Costa Rica is a peace loving country wich has signed a treaty of peace with the entire world ( in 1987 President oscar Arias was awarded the Noble for Peace). Its strong democratic tradition and its political stability have made Costa Rica unique. Economic and social development and the protection of the enviroment are, without a doubt, an exeption in Latin America. In fact the United Nations has placed Costa Rica among the top countries in terms of the quality of life. The most widesp`read religion is Catholicism an Spanish is the most commonly spoken language. Italian and English are both usually well understood in the Country. The healhcare system is similar to that of the USA, with institutional and private clinics wich ensure excellent healt care service.
